The 80.9% of antibiotic prophylaxis prescriptions were discordant with guidelines, the study of American scientists published in the JAMA Network Open said. (https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamanetworkopen/fullarticle/2734798)

Using a national integrated database of medical claims, visits to dentists between 2011 and 2015 were analyzed. A comparative analysis of about 170 thousand prescriptions for antibiotics was conducted with the number of patients who, in connection with heart disease, really needed to receive antibiotics. It was found that in 81% of cases, the appointment of these drugs was unjustified. It is reported that clindamycin was the most common among prescribed antibiotics.

Susan Rowan of the University of Illinois College of Dentistry says that the results of the study should be viewed by dentists not as a reproach, but as a call to action.
